If you are frustrated that your website doesn't appear high up on any of the search websites you need to appreciate how search website optimization works. Search engines rank internet sites in the order of authority. The higher they identify a websites authority then the higher it can rank for the specific keywords it is targeting.

Search website optimization or to give it its acronym SEO, has 2 main parts. They are called On Page or On Site Optimization and Off Page or Off Site Optimization. On Page appertains to adjustments on your website and Off Page refers to other peoples websites.

An internet site increases it’s authority by building up links and domain age. The longer an internet site is online it gets rewarded for being trusted, if it does not flout any of the search websites rules. You can do nothing about this if your website is new. What you can do something about is building top-quality links to your website. As you gather more and more links you're websites authority will increase. Particularly if the links are coming from high authority websites.

Back links are considered to be the most vital Off Page seo element. Although all of the back links in the world will not be well placed to deliver you superb rankings if your internet site isn't set up correctly. On Page optimization refers to having a clear easy to navigate website structure. You ought to be able to navigate from page to page easily. If you can't Google may slap a penalty on your website which stops you from getting good rankings.

All Google wants with reference to your website is it is easy to navigate and provides a good user experience. You provide this with a pleasant clean structure and by having clickable links to each page , and also by having very good content and info on it. This is also key for your marketing efforts. Getting all the visitors in the world to a rubbish site will end up in browsers swiftly exiting your page.

A major component of On Page optimization is essentially having your keywords you are targeting appear in your webpage. You should not over use them or you will get a penalty for over stuffing your content. You need to also put your keywords in the meta titles and H1-H5 heading tags. Only the search engines see this and they use it to establish what your internet site is about. So essentially Google gives you these parameters for your benefit, so use them smartly.

Many credulous web site owners have the word “home” and nothing else in their H1 heading tag. This is really categorized as the most important On Page seo factor. So if there's a website that is considered a high authority as it's got a long and clean history vis not breaking any search websites guidelines, it's really simpler for it to aim at new search phrases.

That is how big authority sites do well, and rank for terms not precisely always exclusive to the rest of their website content.

On-page Optimization Secrets

Ranking high on Google and other search engines today is not an easy thing to accomplish. It is simple if you know exactly what has to be done.

Search engine algorithms are constantly improved, becoming “smarter” and it is not enough anymore to just have quality content on your website. On-page optimization is the first step towards website optimization that every webmaster should start with.

Title optimization

Title has the greatest value for search engines and it is indexed first.

Title should always be:

  • short and descriptive
  • easy to spot and appealing for reading
  • written to offer enough info about article and optimized for search engines – means that title shouldn’t be longer then 60 characters and has to have your keyword or keywords included.

Optimization of meta-tags

Meta tagh represent information to search engines about your we page content. They shouldn’t be ignored, specially description tags.

Short description of your page content brings visitors. If written poorly or doesn’t exist, there is high probability that your page will be ignored and never visited. Meta Description shows on search engines below title.

Very smart thing to do is to include your keywords in meta description.

All 3 meta tags should never be ignored:

  • Title meta tag – your post title (maximum of 60 chars)
  • Description meta tag -focused short information of your page content (160 characters max)
  • Post tags (keywords) – a list of relevant keywords separated with comma (optimum is 5-10 words)

The importance of HTML tags

It is essential to offer the visitors quality content that is easy to read with all relevant words and sentences extracted. There are several HTML tags that can do the job. Those would be H1, H2, H3, italic, quote, underline, bold… Text marked with H1 tag is the most important to search engines.

Accentuating:

  • Header 1 – Usually marked in title or beginning of article
  • Header 2 and 3 – subtitles of various sections
  • Text styles – Bold, Italic and Underline – used for marking keywords within article

Keywords optimization

Website pages should be optimized for reading and for search engines at the same time. Overuse of keywords can make content boring for reading, and Google “spiders” will notice keyword spamming and could ignore it.  So, it is of utmost importance to find balance between those two optimizations.

Keywords optimization – important factors:

  • Keyword research – should be 1th thing done. It is the process that requires some research and there are several good tools that can help you with choosing the best keywords. AdWords keyword tool is free, requires registration only. Or you can try one of professional keyword research software suites like Market Samurai or Traffic Travis that offer free trial (Traffic Travis 3.0 is totally free for download).
  • Keyword density – Some old-school affiliates suggest that keyword density should never be dropped below 5%, but as much as I tried to do that – I always got totaly dumb and ureadable text. I prefer 1-2% keyword density if possible. Much more importance has assigning H1 and H2 tags to your keywords and mentioning your keyword in the first and last sentence.
  • Keyword synonyms – Using words with similar meaning to your keywords throughout content is very important optimization factor. Google implemented semantic web that includes slang and determines if other words mentioned in the text are related to your keywords.
  • Long tail keywords – basically keywords with word or two added in front or after your keyword. Those are words that are usually easier to rank with, because of less competition. It is always good to include them not only for easier ranking, but you can really dig out nice keywords that way.

Link optimization

Special attention should be paid to internal and outbound links and offer visitors quality navigation. Do not be affraid to implement some links on your pages if they can enrich your text

Crucial elements for optimizing links:

Carefully picked anchor text and clean internal link structure will give the best results for flawless on-page SEO. if CMS is used, then ideal solution are permalinks. Keywords/titles are links automatically and you get quality results from search engines.

Picture optimization

Google “spiders” cannot see pictures, they just read text. A picture is understandable for visitors, but for search engines it needs to be optimized by use of special tags

Important things for picture optimization:

  • Alt tag – or alternate text is a mouse-over text that shows on pictures and dissapear after few seconds. It has to be short and adequately describe the picture. It is smart to include your keywords in alt-tags, mostly for search engines sake.
  • Picture title – it is good to have normal picture title and not some “DSCxxxxx.jpg” or any combination seemingly without meaning. Alt tag and picture title should be the same.
  • Picture link – if you want a picture to have a link, then link should have your keyword included too.
  • Size – try to shrink image size to minimum for better performance (load time) of your pages. That is considered very important on-page optimization factor because search engines monitor how fast particular pages load.

Spellchecking

I recommend rereading your post prior to publishing and running spellcheck and grammar check. You can do spellcheck online for free and you will be sure no silly words or sentences appear on your website. If you want to get visitors to come back and read your texts as you publish them, then at least do a spell check.

This is not a part of on-page optimization process but cannot hurt running one right before publishing.

Top 10 SEO Mistakes

The time has come to list the top 10 SEO mistakes committed by website owners worldwide. If you are complaining about your website not ranking high enough on the search engines, then have a good look at this list and make sure your website is not making any of these mistakes.

This article has been divided up into 2 sections: on page SEO and off page SEO mistakes. As you read through this post, you will realise that the mistakes listed here are strongly based on what I’ve covered in my previous posts about SEO.

On Page SEO Mistakes

This section refers to SEO mistakes made on your actual website.

1. Not Targeting 1 Keyword Per Page

This is the most important facet of on page SEO yet so many people are either unaware of its importance or forget to do it. It’s 100 times easier to target just 1 keyword per page than to target 10 keywords per page. At the very maximum, you can target 2 keywords but try to keep it to one. If you focus your efforts on targeting 1 keyword per page, results will arrive much quicker. I can guarantee it.

2. No Keyword In URL

The URL of each page should have the keyword you are targeting for that page. If it doesn’t, then you are going to make it harder to get that page ranking for that target keyword. Fix up your URL if you have to because this is crucial to SEO success.

3. No Keyword In Title Tag

I cannot count the number of pages I’ve been webpages not have their target keyword in the title tag. Just in case you’re not aware, the title tag is what appears at the top of your browser when you’re on a webpage. This is the one mistake I see the most because it is so obvious when I visit a webpage. It’s amazing how many home pages of websites have the word “Home” in their title tags. If you want to have SEO success, you MUST have the target keyword in your title tag. This is certainly one of the top 10 SEO mistakes out there today.

4. Bad Use Of Meta Description And Meta Keywords

The most common mistake regarding meta description is people not using it at all. Just in case you weren’t aware, the meta description is a short description which is used to describe your website in search engine result listings. You might as well use it to entice people to visit your website when they find you on the search engines. It’s also doesn’t hurt to have your target keyword there.

Regarding meta keywords, the most common mistake is people adding a ton of keywords there. You should restrict yourself to a maximum of 5 to 8 keywords because any more will be seen as keyword spamming by the search engines and this will get you punished.

5. Bad Keyword Density

Unfortunately, many people are still committing this grave SEO mistake. Some people go all out and mention their target keyword countless times on their webpage so that it ranks highly. It used to work in the early days of the Internet when search engines were relatively dumb but nowadays it’s bound to get you severely punished or even banned.

On the other hand, there are people who don’t mention their keyword enough throughout their webpages. This is also bad because the search engines have no idea what keyword your webpage is trying to rank highly for.

The goal should be a keyword density of 3% which is not too much and just enough for good SEO.

Off Page SEO Mistakes

This section refers to SEO mistakes made outside your website, but which hamper your website’s ability to rank highly on the search engines.

6. Bad Keyword Research

Keyword research is the basis for SEO success. If you target keywords which have high competition, then your ability to rank highly and get traffic will be reduced in the short term. On the other hand, you should not simply target keywords because of low competition because there may not be enough people searching for that keyword. The key is finding a balance between the amount of searches and the number of websites that are competing to rank for that keyword. Use tools such as Google Keyword Tool can help you do that.

7. No Keyword In Anchor Text

Off page SEO is all about building backlinks aka links back to your website. However, in the process of doing that, many people forget to put their keyword in the anchor text of the backlink. For example, if the primary keyword of your website was “computer repairs”, then you want to computer repairs in your anchor text, just like in the following:

“Visit the best computer repairs service in town.”

Please note that the above is just an example.

This has got to be one of the most simple SEO mistakes committed by website owners today.

8. No Anchor Text Variety

While it’s great to use your target keyword in the anchor text of your backlinks, you must also mix and match with other keywords. In other words, if you have 100 links with the same keyword in your anchor text, then the search engines will get suspicious that a robot is at work and will punish your website. For this reason, you should find about 5 other related keywords and use them in your anchor text too. The greater the variety, the better your SEO results will be.

9. No Link Source Variety

There are plenty of ways to get backlinks, however, one of the top 10 SEO mistakes committed by people too often is by using only a minimal amount of link sources. For example, some people simply use article marketing to get their backlinks. Others just utilise social media. The reality is that you should use a wide variety of sources to get your backlinks. This is because the more sources you use, the more natural the backlinks appear to the search engines, and the higher your website will rank.

10. No Natural Build Up Of Links

Building on the previous mistake, you have to make sure that the amount of backlinks your website gets takes place in a natural, human-like manner. For example, if you get 300 links in just 1 week, then you are going to make search engines suspicious about your website and they will end up punishing you accordingly. However, if you get 300 links over the course of a month, then that will appear to be more natural and they will more than likely than not reward you.

Fix Them And Then Avoid Them

I suggest that you go through all of your websites and see whether they are committing the SEO mistakes covered in this post. Once you correct them, it’s now all about avoiding these SEO mistakes so that your websites continue to get the rankings and traffic they need and deserve.
